8 Steps To Bounce Back From Frustration

Image
Frustration is the feeling of being upset or annoyed as a result of being unable to change or achieve something. Frustration can happen to any person on any normal day. They are not the big crises and tragedies that we sometimes have to bounce back from in our lives. But they are inevitable and left untended, they can add up to a lot of unnecessary stress. To manage everyday frustrations before they get the best of you, try one of these tips: 8. CHANGE IS INEVITABLE: When you plan something, it’s likely something or someone is going to try to create a lot of hurdles in its way. Trying to resist change is a waste of energy. So plan for change, expect it and stand straight against it. 7. BE FLEXIBLE: As told above, change is inevitable. So, flexibility in thinking, behavior, and expectations allows us to deal with change as it comes. If we expect change, then we can be ready for it by not being attached to the way things were, but rolling with the new change wave that has ju...

Consumed by anxiety? Give it a day or two

Image
The problems you’re experiencing today seem fraught and important, but that’s mainly because you’re so narrowly focused on the present The next time you’re consumed by anxiety – which, given the headlines, is probably this minute – you might borrow a tip from the philosopher Massimo Pigliucci, author of the excellent new book How To Be A Stoic. In a recent podcast, Pigliucci described how he used Google Street View and Google Earth to create a slideshow that starts with an image of his own home, then zooms out, out and out, until it shows the whole planet. He consults it when feeling overwrought. You couldn’t hope for a more vivid illustration of the Stoic “dichotomy of control”, which urges us to restrict our attempts to change things to those actually in our power, instead of making ourselves miserable railing against those that aren’t. (See also the “serenity prayer”, popularised by Alcoholics Anonymous.) You are – not to be rude – a tiny part of the cosmos. That doesn’t mak...

Image
If you watched the Emmy Awards on Sunday, there was a certain blockbuster cast you didn't see. While you might have been gearing up for another year of Game of Thrones sweeping the annual award show (since the drama premiered in 2011, it's racked up 38 wins and an astonishing 106 nominations), the cast sat out the 2017 ceremony. No, the TV academy wasn't holding a grudge against Game of Thrones for killing off Hodor, even if we are. Since the season seven premiere date for HBO's fantasy drama was pushed back to July 16, it means it wasn't eligible to be nominated for any Emmys this year. To qualify, a show has to air within the 2016 to 2017 Emmys period, which is anytime between June 1, 2016, and May 31, 2017 (this year, at least). The last three episodes of season six actually fell within the beginning of that time frame, but due to the academy's "hanging episodes" rule, they were lumped in with the previous episodes of season six. This migh...
