Consumed by anxiety? Give it a day or two

Image
The problems you’re experiencing today seem fraught and important, but that’s mainly because you’re so narrowly focused on the present The next time you’re consumed by anxiety – which, given the headlines, is probably this minute – you might borrow a tip from the philosopher Massimo Pigliucci, author of the excellent new book How To Be A Stoic. In a recent podcast, Pigliucci described how he used Google Street View and Google Earth to create a slideshow that starts with an image of his own home, then zooms out, out and out, until it shows the whole planet. He consults it when feeling overwrought. You couldn’t hope for a more vivid illustration of the Stoic “dichotomy of control”, which urges us to restrict our attempts to change things to those actually in our power, instead of making ourselves miserable railing against those that aren’t. (See also the “serenity prayer”, popularised by Alcoholics Anonymous.) You are – not to be rude – a tiny part of the cosmos. That doesn’t mak...

Why Game of Thrones Didn't Get Nominated For Any Emmys This Year

Image
If you watched the Emmy Awards on Sunday, there was a certain blockbuster cast you didn't see. While you might have been gearing up for another year of Game of Thrones sweeping the annual award show (since the drama premiered in 2011, it's racked up 38 wins and an astonishing 106 nominations), the cast sat out the 2017 ceremony. No, the TV academy wasn't holding a grudge against Game of Thrones for killing off Hodor, even if we are. Since the season seven premiere date for HBO's fantasy drama was pushed back to July 16, it means it wasn't eligible to be nominated for any Emmys this year. To qualify, a show has to air within the 2016 to 2017 Emmys period, which is anytime between June 1, 2016, and May 31, 2017 (this year, at least). The last three episodes of season six actually fell within the beginning of that time frame, but due to the academy's "hanging episodes" rule, they were lumped in with the previous episodes of season six. This migh...

Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Image
1) Manchester City could break Premier League record Manchester City and Manchester United have goal differences of +14 after five matches. That is more than Celtic in the Scottish Premier League, a division routinely mocked for being uncompetitive. If the Manchester clubs carry on winning by the margins they have enjoyed so far, then they will surpass the Premier League’s record goal difference (+71 racked up by Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea in 2009-10), the best ever mustered by Celtic (+80), the New Saints in Wales (+75) and the preposterous Ligue 1 record set by Paris Saint-Germain two years ago (+83). Of course that is a big ‘if’ because there is a small clutch of teams who could frustrate or even beat them. But United and, in particular, City are likely to ridicule many opponents this season. City beat United to the 2012 title on goal difference (+64 against +56); for José Mourinho there would surely be no sweeter way to prevail over Pep Guardiola this season. Paul Doyle • Mat...

The 27 funniest video games of all time

Image
It may seem as if video games are all about jumping, shooting, running around or making things explode but most have comedy at their core  Hitman: ‘it looks like a serious assassination sim, but through its wonderfully open and pliable systems, it often makes you feel more like Mr Bean than James Bond’. Photograph: Square Enix Video games have always been funny. From the lumbering kidnap animation in Donkey Kong to the witty wordplay of the Uncharted series, developers have used every tool at their disposal to make us giggle while we shoot, jump, explore and accelerate. Sometimes the humour comes from the script, sometimes the mechanics, and sometimes it’s just the emergent joy of competing against friends. Whichever, we all remember games that have had us doubled over our controllers, helpless with laughter. Here then, are the funniest games we’ve ever played. Please share your own rib-tickling reminiscences in the comments. 27. Jazzpunk (2014) It’s funny because: it’...

Facebook claims it can reach more young people than exist in UK, US and other countries

Social media company’s advertising data doesn’t tally with census data for millennial and other demographics to the tune of millions of people  Facebook’s statistics don’t line up with census data, meaning it claims it can reach more people in certain demographics than actually exist. Photograph: Peter Dasilva/EPA Facebook  claims that it can reach more millennials and people in other demographics than actually exist in the UK, US, Australia, Ireland and France, according to census data. In the UK, Facebook says it can reach 7.8 million users aged between 18 and 24. The Office of National Statistics, however, says there were only 5.8 million people in that age group in the whole in the country in 2016. The problem appears to be systematic and global, with similar discrepancies having been found in various different countries around the world in Facebook’s key markets.
