What are the best aspects of living in Nairobi, Kenya as a young adult?
Oh boy! Where do I even start?
Have you ever heard of Matatus?, these heavily pimped minibusses used as main transport system in Kenyan cities?. I guese not. Matatus are like our ‘subway or metro system’. As a young adult obviously you will not have that money to take uber or taxi everyday. Matatus are cheap they can go from 20 shillings to 100 shillings basically a few cents to 1 dollar. Some even come with free WiFi, imagine having no WiFi at home but whenever you go to school or work you have wifi. They are always fitted with screens and the ambience is pretty cool. Who doesn't want cool things? As a young adult why waste time in mediocre taxi while you can enjoy these magnificent matatus?.
Nairobi night life is one if the best. We have cool clubs from normal to strip clubs, and yes we don't have gay clubs. Even the strip club legality is questionable but who cares as long as they are operating we are cool with it. You and your squad can chose clubs from either City center to residential areas. Big city centers clubs doesn't allow under 25,theoretically yes practically no you just have to ‘tip’ the bouncers to gain acces.
Talking of dates, kenyans especially Nairobians are obsessed with malls. Whenever a word goes that a certain mall is being built you start to see the joy in social media and it becomes even more vibrant as the mall opens. Having a date in one of these malls are the best, you don't need to go to normal downtown Nairobi restaurants and you can visit one of the malls. You can visit many International brands such as KFC, Burger king etc. Let me be honest taking a girl to KFC in Nairobi is a big deal, it may sound unusual but believe me it is. These girls love ‘International’, if you want to get more ‘respect’ take her to pizza hut or any other pizzeria, they love it. It's just that they are damn expensive to many young adults. Spending 1000/= shillings plus in a day is not our typical spending.
Having talked of dates Nairobi also have so many beautiful girls from skinny to thick, from dark to light, from introverts to extroverts, from religious to ratchets. You just have to get your type more so you don't need to have a girlfriend for you to ‘enjoy’ the benefits of having a girlfriend (I know what I am talking about). I am in university and getting a girl to my hostel is not a problem we may not be dating but we are just ‘special friends ‘. You get me?, right?. If you are in school or you just started work you can choose to stay with your girlfriend in a rented apartments and you share costs. It's pretty normal and effective with girls who understands one's financial situation. Nairobi also have handsome men and I don't really know what girls thinks but they like men with money, alot of money that makes them start dating older men, we call them sponsors. In kenya their are categories of people, those who have money, those who are ‘rich’ online and those who don't care about being or look rich. I don't care.
Nairobi is mostly divided into two Eastern and Western Nairobi. Eastern Nairobi have poor to mediocre standards of living while Western Nairobi have a reasonable wealthy living. Of course if you are from East you will hang out with your Eastern friends and if you are from west you will hangout with your western friends. Their is pretty much difference between these two categories of people the western friends like to copy Hollywood style of living from their dressing and speeches, what they post on social media and basically their life. Eastern youths care less as they speak in sheng and they normally like dance hall music. I am neither of them.
Alot of young adults like to indulge themselves with drugs, it's pretty common to see young men and women smoking weed. Their maybe some hardcore drugs but they are super expensive and only a few can afford them. In my life in Nairobi I have come upon weed, cocaine or its derivatives and heroine or its derivatives. I don't use drugs.
In Nairobi people never buy copyrighted DVDs. People mostly use torrents and if you don't have wifi at home you can visit movie shops which openly burns movies in CDs. Their are no regulatory body in kenya to stop them as they are given license to sell movies. Talking of movies we have movie theaters such as Imax. If you don't want to wait for DVD release you can visit these movie theaters. Their are a few of us who owns Playstation or Xbox we like gaming in a central place. In downtown Nairobi their are so many gaming places which we visit most of the times whenever we are free.
As a young adult those are the things I can say about living in Nairobi, if I remember another one I will update my answer.
